Introduction
WRPS Tamil unit aims to nurture our pupils’ love for Tamil Language and appreciate Indian culture and tradition by adopting varies teaching strategies, activities and programmes. Through these pupils are effectively engaged in learning the language. We encourage our pupils to participate in internal and external competitions to stretch their abilities, to build up their confidence and to expose to challengers. TL Teachers are committed in providing holistic education to all pupils.

Internal Language-Based Competitions

Singing Competition | A competition that encourages pupils to learn Tamil nursery rhymes and songs which depicts values. Nursery rhymes are important for language acquisition and help with speech development. | P1 |
Story Telling Competition | A competition that tests pupils’ skill in talking in Tamil using the correct grammatical nuances of the language. Pupils relate a story to their audience through voice and gesture. | P2 |
Fancy Dress cum Character portrayal Competition | A competition that allows pupils to portray a famous historical character or storybook character. Pupils move out of your comfort zone and get into the skin of another character. It gives them a chance to feel and showcase a variety of emotions - the choices, thoughts, words, actions and consequences | P3 |
Creative writing Competition | A competition that allows pupils to use their imagination and creativity to express ideas and thoughts in a way that is personal to them. | P4 |

Deepavali | The Tamil Unit organizes Deepavali Celebration concert every year. It provides a platform for pupils to celebrate the traditional festival and through the celebration, it helps to strengthen the racial harmony among all races. | All pupils |
Pongal Festival | The Tamil Unit celebrates Pongal festival with the pupils. This festival teaches pupils to understand the importance of harvesting and how harvest festivals are celebrated all over the world. It aims to provide a platform for pupils to celebrate the traditional festival and appreciate the richness of one’s culture. | All pupils |
Mother Tongue Fortnight | MT Fortnight is a 2-week long programme. During the 2-weeks, pupils are exposed to various cultural and traditional practices. Pupils also participate in language-based competitions customised at various levels. | All pupils |
P4 Cultural Fiesta | The P4 pupils experience a wonderful cross-cultural half-day programme where they learn and appreciate the culture differences through the various traditional activities planned for them. | P4 Pupils |
Hooked on Reading | Reading is the key for language learning, it benefits our pupils by enriching their vocabulary and strengthening their reading comprehension skills. Therefore, the Tamil unit conducts reading programmes for all levels throughout the year. The pupils are exposed to storybooks of different themes from Primary One to Six. In WRPS, we get pupils “Hooked on Reading”. | All pupils |
Sutti Mayil | In order to instil the love of reading and keep our pupils interested in language based games. This programme is conducted for middle and upper primary. | P5 –P6 pupils |
Reading Booklet | This programme allows pupils to start the reading habit using the booklet given to them. Pupils read the stories to their peers, parents and teachers and get feedback on how to improve their reading skill. | P5 pupils |
Oral Package | A presentation skills programme that hones pupils’ confidence and fluency in using the Tamil language to communicate. | P6 pupils |
