Introduction
WRPS’s Tamil unit aims to nurture pupils’ love for the Tamil language and to deepen their appreciation of Indian culture and traditions through varied teaching strategies, activities, and programmes. These approaches actively engage pupils in language learning. We encourage participation in internal and external competitions to stretch abilities, build confidence, and expose pupils to challenges. Tamil language teachers are committed to providing a holistic education for all pupils.

Pongal Festival |
The Tamil Unit celebrates the Pongal festival with pupils to teach the significance of harvesting and to show how harvest festivals are observed worldwide. The celebration provides a platform for pupils to engage with traditional customs and appreciate the richness of their culture. |

Deepavali |
The Tamil Unit organizes an annual Deepavali celebration concert that brings together Indian and non-Indian pupils to honor the traditional festival. The event fosters cultural appreciation and strengthens racial harmony among all students. |

Mother Tongue Fortnight
|
MT Fortnight is a 2-week long programme. During the 2-weeks, pupils are exposed to various cultural and traditional practices. During this period, students are strongly encouraged to participate in class competitions designed to enhance their language skills and fluency. These competitions are tailored to be both age-appropriate and suitable for their level of language acquisition. Yearly, winners receive trophies and all participants receive medals to commemorate the events. Competitions: Singing, Storytelling, Fancy dress cum character portrayal, creative writing,
advertisement, oratorical and ICT based competitions.

P4 Cultural Fiesta |
The P4 pupils experience a wonderful cross-cultural half-day programme
where they learn and appreciate the culture differences through the various
traditional activities planned for them.

Hooked on Reading |
Reading is the key for language learning, it benefits our pupils by enriching their vocabulary and strengthening their reading comprehension skills. Therefore, the Tamil unit conducts reading programmes for all levels throughout the year. The pupils are exposed to storybooks of different themes from Primary One to Six. In WRPS, we get pupils “Hooked on Reading”. |

Sutti Mayil |
Sutti Mayil magazine reading for Primary 3–6 pupils features stories, word games, and engaging articles tailored to their level. The Tamil Language department uses the magazine periodically to run related activities that reinforce reading skills and stimulate interest in the language. |

Reading Booklet |
This programme allows pupils to start the reading habit using the booklet given to them. Pupils read the stories to their peers, parents and teachers and get feedback on how to improve their reading skill. |

Spelling Bee Competition |
The Mediacorp Vasantham Tamil Spelling Bee (Tamizhodu Villayadu) is a major annual competition in Singapore for primary school students, promoting Tamil language proficiency. Supported by the Tamil Language Learning Promotion Committee, the event involves primary schools, featuring intense rounds where students compete for the championship. |
